The Responsible Paddler
Oru Kayak’s quick guide to kayaking in nature; how to keep it clean and how to enjoy your paddling experience responsibly.
One of the biggest draws of kayaking is gaining a connection to nature. Being immersed in natural surroundings recharges us, centers us and helps us disconnect from the daily grind. In many ways, connecting with nature provides health benefits and can be instrumental in stress relief.
It stands to reason that kayaking is the perfect fix for those who crave the natural escape. But, enjoying these precious places in nature creates a responsibility for each of us. It doesn’t require much for each of us to do our part and, doing so ensures these special places can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Respecting Wildlife
As tempting as it may be to get a closer look, approaching wild birds and other wildlife can be dangerous to both you and to the animal. It’s always smarter to photograph or observe fauna from a considerable distance. Feeding is also a bad idea as it can - over time - encourage some species to become more trusting of or dependent upon humans.
Keep it Down
Loud music or shouting may not seem like a big deal. But, loud noises can disturb nesting birds as well as nursing animals. While paddling more peaceful natural retreats, it makes sense to keep our noise levels down and simply enjoy the sounds of nature.
Put Litter in its Place
Most of us wouldn’t dream of tossing rubbish into a pristine body of water. But, there are still a couple of tips that can help make disposing of litter properly second nature. Bring a bag for collecting trash that you might accumulate. It’s also a good idea to use reusable cups and utensils instead of disposable ones. Less waste is always a great idea.
Call in the Crew
You’ve likely seen recent news articles about groups of people cleaning up beaches, lakes and other natural areas. Why not organize your own? Kayaking gives you the opportunity to lend a hand to your local waterways by collecting litter, and it’s a fun way to get your friends involved.
The more, the merrier. But, it’s important to be well-organized and focused on the task at hand. You’ll want to have a plan in place for the removal of collected waste and a set place to meet up once you’ve finished.
Most of us strive to be Eco-conscious and as unobtrusive as possible in nature. Kayaking serves to heighten our awareness and our appreciation for nature. By following a few simple steps, we can be certain to enjoy our paddling experience to its fullest while leaving nothing behind but a ripple.
